Tear & Share Christmas Tree

cool Christmas is a time for gratitude and sharing. Well, this Tear & Share Christmas Tree will certainly test your family’s sharing skills! Hurry and tear off a delicious doughball before you little elves munch away this fun festive starter.

Ingredients

300g strong white bread flour
7g dried yeast (from a sachet)
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing
200ml warm water
1 egg, beaten

FOR THE GARLIC BUTTER DIP (OPTIONAL)
50g soft butter
1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed

Method

  1. Measure the flour, yeast and salt into a bowl. Add the oil and water and mix to a soft dough.
  2. Turn out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead the dough until smooth. Place in a clean, lightly oiled bowl, cover with clingfilm or a tea towel and leave to rise for 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  3. Preheat the oven to 220°C/Fan 200°C/Gas 7 and line a baking tray with non-stick paper.
  4. Knock the dough back, then divide into about 30 balls.
  5. Arrange the balls on the baking tray in the shape of a Christmas Tree. Cover with clingfilm and leave to prove for 30 minutes.
  6. Brush the dough with the beaten egg and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until well risen and lightly golden.
  7. Meanwhile, if making the dip, mix the butter, garlic and a pinch of salt in a small bowl.
  8. Remove the bread from the oven and serve warm with the garlic butter.
