Family Christmas traditions

Christmas is magical for children; full of excitement, wonder and amazement. By creating memorable family traditions, you can make it even more special for them. From sprinkling reindeer dust outside your front door, to making your own Christmas Eve boxes, we’ve got the very best of Christmas customs covered!

Santa’s reindeer need help to guide Father Christmas’ sleigh to your house on Christmas Eve. Light the way and give Rudolph and his friends a clear pathway by sprinkling magical reindeer dust outside before children head up to bed.

Simply mix oats with edible glitter (ordinary glitter is harmful to wildlife) to create your own homemade magical reindeer dust. Kids will have lots of fun making this and just wait to see their faces in the morning when they see that Santa and his reindeer have been!

The latest Christmas tradition is to give children (just the one!) present on Christmas Eve. Box up whatever you like – our favourite is to include a pair of new Christmas pyjamas and a Christmas film to snuggle down and watch as a family– preferably in front of a roaring fire.

An Elf is sent from the North Pole to watch over children to see if they have been ‘naughty or nice’ this year. Each night they go off to report to Santa and return the next morning positioned in a new spot around the house, ready for excitable children to discover. The Elf gets his Christmas magic by being named — which is what gives him the power to fly back to the North Pole each night.

Why not use Elf on the Shelf instead of or as well as your traditional advent calendar to mark the countdown before Christmas. Don’t forget to put your creative Santa hat on when positioning your elf each morning – it’s another bit of unexplained magical mystery to add to the season!

The NORAD Santa Tracker lets you track Father Christmas and his sleigh via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Volunteers answer calls and emails from around the world to keep you completely up to date on Santa’s whereabouts on the big night. Very handy indeed!
