Your unborn baby places huge demands on your iron reserves. Large amounts of iron are essential in your pregnancy diet for the developing blood supply of the foetus and for the extra blood that you need at this time. Iron is also important for placenta development and growth of the baby. Also you need to build up your baby’s own store of iron for him to draw on in the first few months of life.

Nine out of ten pregnant women suffering from morning sickness feel better after using a natural ginger-based remedy, according to research from the US. Finely chop a 0.5cm/1/4 in slice of fresh ginger and add to a cup of boiling water. Infuse for about 5 minutes and add a tablespoon of honey before drinking.

1 clove garlic, crushed
1 medium carrot cut into matchsticks
100g (4oz) baby sweetcorn cut into quarters
1/2 yellow bell pepper, seeded and cut into matchsticks

300g (10oz) beef fillet, cut into very fine strips 1 tbsp cornflour
150ml (5oz) beef stock
2 tbsp dark brown sugar
2 tbsp soy sauce

Method:

Heat the sesame oil in a wok and stir fry the garlic, carrots, sweetcorn and courgette for 3 to 4 minutes. Add the beef and continue to stir fry for 4 to 5 minutes.
