It's easy to make fairy cakes into something very special with my party recipes. How about making these for a teddy bear’s picnic with sandwiches and biscuits cut into the shapes of teddy bears using cookie cutters.

The most enjoyable parties are the ones where children participate. Children like to play games and my children always loved the Sucking Smarties (M&Ms) game. Have a pile of Smarties (M&Ms) on a plate and some small bowls. The object of the game is to get as many Smarties (M&Ms) as possible into the bowl by sucking them on to the end of the straw and then letting them drop into the bowl. The one who gets the most Smarties (M&Ms) in their bowl in one minute is the winner. There are lots more great party games in my book Annabel Karmel’s Complete Party Planner

Ingredients

100g (4 oz) soft margarine
100g (4 oz) caster sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla essence
2 eggs
75ml (2 1/2 fl oz) milk
150g (5oz) plain flour
1 teaspoon baking power
1/2 teaspoon salt

Decoration

Smarties or M&Ms for eyes
Chocolate buttons for ears
Jelly Tots for nose
Tubes of black Writing Icing (available in small tubes in most supermarkets)

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 350F/180C/Gas mark 4. Put all the ingredients for the cakes into a bowl or food processor and beat together until smooth. Spoon into 12 paper cases and place these into the sections of a 12-hole bun tray. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes or until well risen and the sponge springs back when you press with your fingertips.

Decorate the cakes to look like Teddy Bears. Put a blob of black Writing Icing in the centre of the Smarties (M&Ms) and attach these to the cakes with some Writing icing. Add a Jelly Tot/gumdrop for the nose, draw on the mouth using black Writing Icing and stick on chocolate buttons for the ears.
