Root vegetables have a naturally sweet taste so are perfect for puree baby food; they puree to a smooth baby food and are unlikely to cause an allergy so they make a good puree baby food. Orange fleshed vegetables like carrot, sweet potato and pumpkin are rich in beta carotene - the vegetable source of vitamin A which is important for growth, fighting infection, healthy skin and hair. Cooking vegetables in a steamer is one of the best ways of preserving nutrients.

Potato should not be pureed using an electric blender as it breaks down the natural starches and produces a sticky pulp. It’s best to puree potato in a baby food grinder or mouli – these are hand turned food mills which press the potato through very small holes to make a smooth puree. A baby food grinder is also good to use when pureeing foods like dried apricots or peas as it gets rid of the indigestible husks

Puree Baby Food Ingredients

250g carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, butternut squash or pumpkin, peeled

Method

Chop the vegetables into small pieces. Put in a steamer set over boiling water and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes or until tender.  Alternatively, place in a pan, pour over just enough boiling water to cover and simmer covered for about 15 minutes until soft.

Blend the vegetable to a puree using some of the liquid from the bottom of the steamer or the pan.

Spoon a little puree into your baby’s bowl and serve lukewarm. Pour the remainder into an ice cube tray and freeze.
