Most babies will be eating three solid meals a day by this age, however milk should still form a large part of the diet when your weaning baby. Solids should now provide an important source of iron. Try combinations like carrot puree with lentils and cheese, dried apricot papaya and tofu. Vitamin C aids the absorption of iron from plant foods so give vitamin C rich fruits like kiwi or purees like Strawberry and Pear Puree. Although breast or formula milk should remain your baby’s main drink, from 6 months you can introduce cow’s milk and dairy foods like yoghurt and cheese as these provide the best source of calcium which is important for good health and formation of bones and teeth. Chopped or pureed vegetables in a cheese sauce makes a good meal for your baby. Eggs can be given after six months provided the white and the yolk are cooked until solid. You can stir sieved hard-boiled egg yolk into chopped or pureed vegetables to add valuable protein and iron. You can now introduce wheat and oat based cereals like Weetabix and Porridge. Fortified breakfast cereals are also a good source of iron. Once your baby is able to hold food, fingers of wholemeal toast with a spread of butter/margarine are good. Provided there is no history of topic illness in the immediate family (asthma, food allergy, eczema or hay fever) smooth peanut butter can be introduced from 6months. Peanut butter is a wonderful nutrient dense food providing a valuable source of protein and minerals. Mini peanut butter sandwiches make good finger food
