Nut Allergy - Peanuts
It is important to buy only packaged ‘nut-free’ labelled food. Loose bakery products, sweets or chocolates may contain nuts. Whole nuts should not be given to children under the age of five because of the risk of choking.
In the case of peanuts and peanut products which can induce a severe allergic reaction - anaphylactic shock - which can be life threatening, it is best to err on the side of caution. In families with a history of any kind of food allergy, it is advisable to avoid all products containing peanuts including peanut oil until the child is 3 years old and then seek medical advice before introducing peanut products into the diet. Peanut butter and finely groundnuts however can be introduced from 6 months, provided there is no family history of nut allergy.
