On average, babies are born with only sufficient iron reserves for approximately the first six months of life. Iron deficiency is the commonest nutritional problem for young children. In the UK, one in five babies between six months and two years have below the desired level. Red meat provides the best source of iron for your baby as well as protein and other nutrients. The trouble is that meat can be quite chewy, which can put babies off, so it's best to combine meat with root vegetables such as sweet potato or fruit suc as apple and dried apricot, which will help to produce a much smoother texture. You can then move on to cooked minced meet, which you can whiz in a blender for a few seconds to make it easier for your baby to swallow. |
