Even if you think breastfeeding isnt for you I would recommend giving it a try. You may like it more than you think. However if you have already given it a go and it didn’t work out, don’t worry, your baby still stands a very good chance of being healthy.

Breast milk is convenient, it is at the right temperature, sterile, needs no preparation, there are no bottles to wash and it’s free. Women who breastfeed have less risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer, ovarian cancer and broken bones due to osteoporosis. Breastfeeding creates a special bond between mother and baby. A baby’s sucking at the breast causes the uterus to contract and it will return to its normal size much faster. You also burn more calories to produce milk. Babies nappies are not as smelly as bottle fed babies. Breast milk is free! These are all great reasons to breasfeed, but for me it is the overwhelming pleasure and satisfaction I feel that is beneficial in itself. To see you thriving baby and know that you you have played a part in this, not only gives you a great feeling of achievement, but also gives your baby a first-class start in life, which is priceless! It is hard work and exhausting at times, but so is bottlefeeding! Breastfeeding is much more a two-way street, where you both get to benefit from the whole process together. |
