I find if you roll the icing too thin it wrinkles. roll the icing 3mm-5mm thick. also, when you lay the icing on, smoothe from the top then down the sides.
dont push it or it'll stretch and rip. i use a proper smoother, or find a flat piece of plastic (marg tub lid with the edge cut off) and use that or with cool hands, use the palm of your hand.
hope that helps

If anyone is interested, Asda now have natural food colouring in Blue and Green (as well as red, pink and yellow).
They've also got the icing tubes for £1.25 which is quite reasonable and cake boards for 64p or 68p (can't remember) which is v reasonable and ideal for Christmas Cakes! In square and round (10 inch).
Their own branded stuff in the baking section is deffo cheaper than the branded stuff.
Well this is what we have in our local one anyway.
Happy Baking!

Hi, it went surprisingly well! Couldn't get the icing quite as smooth as i would have liked but disguised it with a ribbon round the side! I was really pleased with the cake though, we had some today and it was lovely, will def attempt another one next year! Once i've downloaded pics will add them on!
