Reduced sugar items are worse than regular. Same goes for low fat things. They substitute sweetners for sugar. I refuse to buy anything with any sort of sweetner in it as it's just not good for you. Would rather have sugar in it's natural state. x

Gotta agree, low sugar usually means artificial sweetners and low fat ususally means there is lots of extra sugar or added to bulk it out. I try and avoid all that sort of stuff for my LO and even for myself. I reckon natural is best.

just checked out a bottle of fruit shoot and it says

no artificial colours or flavours
low sugar (contains naturally occurring sugars)
fruit juice from concentrate

in very small letters it says Low Calorie Blackcurrant and Apple Soft Drink with Sweeteners....

so if it contains an artificial sweetener Aspartame, which it does, how can it say it has no artificial flavours surely a sweetener is a flavour....i guess food labling is allowed to distinguish between flavours and sweeteners but pretty misleading.

well i can safely say it will be cartons of apple juice now all the way when we need a drink out and about.

i really should look at lables more carefully.

Agreed Anna you really need to scour those labels as they are so misleading. I wish artificial sweetners / colourings / preservatives would just be banned altogether. Also try to buy juice that is not from concentrate. x

I'm totally paranoid about artificial sweeteners - even buy the Calpol that has sugar... These chemicals are so un-natural, and even foods that are aimed at children are full of them. It's shocking, really. Feel the same way about things like Petit Filous... If you look at the ingredients they really have very little nutritional value and have thickeners and stabilisers in them. We eat natural live yoghurt with fruit puree or even jam stirred in. Sounds evangelical but am not an obsessive, honest!! It just tastes so much better and does baby's insides good too. Am sure the friendly bacteria are the reason (or at least one of them) that we never get tummy bugs in our house... xxx

Oooh - as an added question, what do you guys think about marmite? Isn't it way too salty for little children? Have never given it to my one-year old but a lot of the mums at playgroup seem happy to give it to their toddlers at toast time...
