Default 8 month old gags and is sick on lumps and finger foods

Hello
I am new, so I hope I am posting in the correct section. Izzy isn't exactly a fussy eater. She pretty much eats all I give her (except milk, but that is another story!) but I've been trying to introduce more lumps and finger foods. I gave her a well cooked carrot stick last week and she bit a bit off (she has 2 front bottom teeth) and gagged on it and then brought up the entire contents of her stomach - all breakfast milk and porridge.
Then later I tried with some rusks (as advised by HV) and the same happened again.
Has anyone got any experience of this and any advice how I can try and develop her eating habits without her throwing up her entire previous meal?
She is just over 8 months old.
Thanks

Big hugs and welcome to the site xx

Georgia was exactly the same with lumps and finger food until about 11 months. I just use to keep trying her and offering finger foods and eventully she got there. Its good your LO eats a variety of foods and Georgia only ate a few things.

My Theo is the complete opposite. He eats quite a few finger foods already and doesnt gag to much either.

All babies develop at their own pace. I would give it a week and try again. Just keep the baby wipes handy lol xxx

Thankyou! I just felt soooo awful when she threw up! She only drinks about 3oz of milk at breakfast normally but that day she drank 7oz, I was over the moon so was heartbroken when it all came back up!
Luckily, I've got a splashmat and an easy clean highchair!
Will try again today, wish me luck!

Hiya, we went through this with Finley too at the same age, it wasnt so much with finger foods but with thicker textured food and in general all spoon fed food! lol! It is so infuriating and stressful at the time but honestly it won't last hon, by 9 months or around then he was back to eating everything and still does now.
We have the same prob with milk though, he just prefers his food! Typical man!!

I'd defo agree with the others and say to keep trying.

I would avoid rusks as the sugar content is shocking, buttered fingers of wholemeal toast is a good finger food. I think firmer textures can be better rather than things that go sloppy and clarty in their mouth.

She will get there when she's ready, it must be horrible to see her being sick

you have my sympathy, as my daughter was just like this (still is in fact)
Anything including puree would make her gag and as she had a reflux she would bring up everything in her tummy, this happened at virtually every meal for months.
The GP gave lots of good advice (his child was the same so he wasn't talking normal doctor drivel) and one thing he said was too give her rusks (which i always objected to due to sugar and the fat hey are basically biscuits) as he said they dissolve so slowly and encourage them to chew, TBH it did help.
Carrots were (and again still are) something that can make her gag and vomit, there one of those funny textures that can slip around the mouth!
One thing we did was as soon as she started to gag to try and distract her (after a while we think it could have been psychological too, as soon as she felt it she wouldnt stop til she was sick) so we would jump up and around and make lots of noise, sometimes it helped and she would be ok, other times not (but highly embarrassing in public lol)
Things will get better, big hugs (and funny enough your post is almost identical to my first post here almost 2 years ago!!! and cole replied to me too )

its very disheartening when it happens, especially when they've had a good feed (imo also drank very little and took an age), shes kept it down then gags on a tiny bit of bloody carrot and it all comes up again and your back to square one, not knowing whether to feed then again in case their hungry and worry about feeding them too son after they have been sick...... makes me want to cry thinking about it!!!!
If it helps i always feed imo in the nuddy so i didnt have to constantly wash clothes, and got one of those all over bibs so i didnt have to take the straps off her highchair 2 or sometimes 3 times a day to wash and dry and put back on

Thanks for all your lovely replies. I gave her one of the Organix carrot sticks that look like wotsits and she managed to gun it without choking, but I'm still treading very carefully!

Oh bless ya hun! You sound really disheartened... please don't. Keep perservering chick, that's the only way. The only thing I can say is if she is sick, make a note and see if its when you feed her certain foods. The main thing you need to realise is they all develop at their own pace... you just have to go with them. Good Luck... oh and hello and welcome to AK xxx
