Default Just beginning to wean, advice needed.

Hi all,

I am new to the site and have been advised by many people to join.

My little boy is 6 months old, I have been trying to wean for 3 weeks now and don't really know what the best things to be giving him are and how much?

I started by giving him baby porridge, pureed sweet potato, fromage frais, banana and pureed broccoli. He would take everything except the broccoli as that made him gag.

All of a sudden he has started to refuse to let me put the spoon in his mouth. I have tried giving him jars and still nothing although he loves to hold and suck on a slice of toast.

Is there anything I should be doin? Or anything I should be giving him? How much should I be giving him? What are the best foods to take when we are going out?

Apologies for sounding thick I am just really unsure if I am doing the right thing in order to wean my little boy, health visitors haven't been much help. He is my first and I dont want to do anything wrong.

Thank you
Sarah xx

You could try giving him a spoon and letting him have a go at feeding himself with it, while you also do the same. You could try lots of different fruit and veg - cook the harder fruit before you puree them. The sweeter veg often go down best at first - sweet potato, carrot, parsnip, pumpkin. Or you can mix some fruit in with the veg. Green veg like broccoli can be stronger in flavour and are often not liked at the start for that reason.

If he doesn't want to be spoon fed but will happily suck on some toast you could try him out on some finger foods instead. Try steamed/cooked veg pieces, softer fruit, or cooked harder fruit (like apple or pear). Just put different things in front of him and let him get on with trying them out himself. He won't necessarily eat them but will get used to the idea of handling them, tasting them etc to start with and over time will learn to chew and swallow them. Look up baby led weaning which will give you more information on following this sort of method.

Until he is one he will get all the nutrition he needs from his milk so don't stress too much about getting him to eat everything straight away. It is very much a learning thing at the start.
