Smile My 7 month old refusing solids

Hi All,

I am new to the site but have been advised to take a look and hopefully get some advice !

My daughter was weaned at 6 months and has had range of foods including, sweet pots, corguettes, parsnip, carrots, brocolli, turnip, apple, pear mango etc..all the first stage foods. I had started to introduce chicken stock into her purees for the protein and was just about to start the stage 2 weaning.

She has now point blank refused to take anything from a spoon and for 2 weeks I have struggled to get her to eat anything and we have both ended up in tears at some points.

Out of desperation I tried toast and hey ho she loves it...I dipped it into baby rice and she loves it...today it was 4 cubes of veggies and toast dipped and she ate most of it....I am going with the fact that she is more interested in feeding herself by hand and coarser textures. And I dont want to offer her toast at every meal.

Can you point me to any feeding plans or threads so I can progess into protein rich foods for her to try...also should I be offering the first stage veggies but in cubes or mashed? What about breakfast how can I get that into her?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :0)...

Joanne xx

Hi there. Sounds like you little one has no interest in being spoon fed any more. I would go with finger food as much as possible and just let her get on with it herself. There is a whole range of finger foods you can offer her. Try giving her pieces of fruit, cut them into sticks and let her get on with it. Pieces of harder fruit like apples, and even pears can be steamed till softer. Same goes for vegetables. You could try pieces of pasta, pancakes, omlettes, cheese. You could try little pieces of meat chicken, fish or even steak would be good, or you could make up patties/fish cakes. If you have the New Complete Baby & Toddler Meal Planner there are some great recipes in there. If you don't have it then maybe try a browse through your local library.

You could also try just letting her have the spoon herself and see how she gets on with that if she wants to feed herself. You can always have a second spoon and sneak in spoonfuls of food while she is busy trying to do the same hersel.

Just remember that until she is 1 milk remains her most important source of nutrition and she is getting all she needs from that nutritionally. Don't stress too much about introducing protein or making sure she has a balanced diet each and every day. It will even out over time. At this stage she is learning about textures and flavours, how to eat, how to feed herself and her body is learning how to deal with all the new foods. If she want to feed herself let her. If she doesn't end up eating much as a result don't worry about it, she is learning and that is the important thing. The best thing is to relax and follow her lead.

Oh DrP thanks so much for the advice, I really was starting to worry that there was something really wrong ..Ive tried her with some more solids at teatime, some carrot sticks (steamed) and some mashed sweet pots..she ate a little and started to gag and choke a little on the carrot, after that she refused anymore...I will keep on trying

My 8 month old isn't at all interested in food it seems. I have struggled for weeks trying him on various purees. I am just a little nervous about doing the baby led weaning! Let me know how you get on. x
