Red face Week 3 of the meal planner

Can any one please advise me. We are currently on week 2 of the meal planner. My son is stil not taking to eating very well he doesn't open his mouth when he see the food coming so we have to play games and I get the food in that way. He eats it then.

My main question is this one week three is say to replace a bottle of milk with water /jucy. Do I replace it for the same quantity?

Don't replace milk. Milk is still the most important source of your childs nutrients till they are one, so the only reason to cut back on the amount of milk that you give him is if he starts refusing it and cuts back himself. The meal planner is only meant as a guide. It is not a "must follow". Fit your sons meals in around his current milk schedule and see what suits you both best timing wise.

If he's not interested in food don't force the issue, he will gain interest in his own time when he is ready. Just offer it but if he is not interested then let it be and try again another day. As I said milk is still the most important thing for him.

Absolutely agree with DrP. Much as I like AK stuff (didnt use it with DD as she's a BLW baby as she refused puree), dont take the planner as gospel. Water and milk in a beaker with food yes but most importantly...

FOOD IS FOR FUN UNTIL THEY ARE ONE!

Milk is the most nutrutionally dense food a baby can have: teh idea of weaning is to get a baby used to food so they naturally will reduce milk volumes as they start to eat more.

Also I KNOW the NHS yap on abt stopping bottles by the time they are one but personally I know of no baby who has done this. DS had a bed bottle til he was 3 and then stopped it himslef when he saw DD had a bottle. Bottles are the quickest way of getting a volume of milk into them esp at brekkie when they are starving! DD on 3 bottles a day: brekkie, lunch and dinner at age 1 and she's generally reducing the amt she takes at lunchtime so it'll go soon enough.

Thanks DrP ans Hiann.

I'm keeping with the milk. But food is really difficult. He doesn't seem to want my food anymore. I tried some banana delight by Heinz and scoffed it down. don't know weather to try bought jar food for awhile and then go back to my cooking

I agree with the other advice,

is he spitting out food or is it his moro (sp) reflex to push food out with his tongue? you really have to get the spoon over the top of his tongue and towards the back (without gagging him of course!) I can do it now, but my OH still struggling with it.

have you tried mashing up half a fresh and ripe banana with some of his milk? or go for the sweeter apple varieties like royal gala (my DD was fussy on the variety - hated braeburns and cox but loved pink lady and royal gala)

but don't worry, they all get there in the end - nobody yet knows of a 2 year old who won't eat!

xxx

You'll might have an even bigger battle on your hands if you do that. I'd stick to homemade, and as matilda s mum suggested try the sweeter varieties of fruit.

Have you tried finger foods at all and just let you LO play with the food and try to feed himself and see how he gets on

that's an idea - what can you offer as finger foods at this age?

Hicazza

I'm exactly at the same point as you and mine's started to go off food a little bit. I think for the first couple of weeks he was either excited or indifferent about it all and now he either doesn't open his mouth or we have to do a whole dance routine to get one mouthful in!

We give him a spoon to hold so he can bash things about but I think the finger food is also a great idea!

Also, the way I interpreted the meal planner was that you stick to things as normal but only do water/juice at lunchtime. I am still giving him milk but plan to do this from Saturday onwards when we're both home as we'll also be introducing the evening meal then too.

It also depends on how much your little one is on - ours has 210ml x 5 feeds so can afford to drop one potentially.

Anyway, just thought I'd write as I didn't want you thinking you're the only one out there doing the same at the mo!

xx
