Unhappy Obesity and pregnancy....

Hello ladies! Not been on here in a while but I was wondering if I can enlist your help? I'm just over 17st and think i'm possibily pregnant. Doing a test tomorrow. Just wondered really about the increased risks and stuff and if there are any of you larger ladies out there who have have perfectly healthy normal pregnancies and babies?? Just a bit worried. Thanks xx

Hi there. I'm currently pregnant with my second and hadn't got rid of all my first baby fat!!! With this pregnancy I haven't yet put any weight on; in fact I've lost a kg or two. However, cos my BMI is just over 30 (or as a midwife or nurse I saw recently put it - "you've got a bit of pudding"!) I'm having to have a glucose tolerance test at 28 weeks to check for gestational diabetes.

Apart from this one mw, no-one else has suggested that there should be any problems. I also have a friend who was a very large lady (much larger than me) and she had 3 perfectly healthy babies. She had diabetes with her 3rd pregnancy but didn't have an overly large baby.

I would find out and as dara says, go and see your gp/discuss with your mw at your booking appointment. The fact that you've posted this suggests you are aware there are increased risks, but I don't think it's worth getting too worried until you know for sure.

Good luck!

Obviously speak to your doctor but I think being obese can make it a bit harder on you more so than on your LO but just try to eat really healthily during your pregnancy and don't worry too much. Congratulations BTW!

With medical advice I think you're best speaking with your midwife/doctor. If there are concerns I'm sure he or she will broach them with you. The only thing I would say is don't diet at all when you're pregnant (unless it's a specific one from your doctor obviously ) - just eat healthily and aim for well-balanced. You can't risk your bubs-to-be by cutting back on carbs or all fats or whatever.

generally speaking your more at risk of diabetes and other pregnancy complications, also a harder labour and obviously if anesthetic is needed its a higher risk if your over weight. It depends on your overall health as well, i would speak to your dr if your worriedxxxxxxxx

Hi,
I was about 14 and a half stone when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter Sophie, who's now 21 months. I had a great pregnancy and only gained just under 2 stone, I didn't diet during pregnancy, just tried to eat healthily. I didn't have any obesity related complications at all. I'm 16 stone 4 now (obviously I struggled to lose the weight I did gain while I was pregnant with Sophie!) and would love another baby but I'm worried that I'd be pushing my luck at the weight I am now, but every woman and every pregnancy is different, if you are pregnant take advice from you G.P and midwife but if you are pregnant and happy then enjoy it as worrying can cause problems of it's own, good luck hope all goes well.
