Question Gestational diabetes

I had to have a test for getational diabetes on Friday. My doc said I should have it because Logan was so big at birth (9lb 9oz/ 4340lbs). So we ended up being there for almost two hours in total, hubby & Logie were there too as I get a scan each time I go. It was packed, and too warm & Logie was screaming by the end as he was hungry & I hadn't expected to be there that long!

Anyway, the test was negative but I still don't understand the reasoning behind me having the test done in the first place, just because Logie was a big baby! Every urine test that I've had done so far has been negative for sugar! Also I've had no symptoms and had none in my last pregancy! So it seems a bit weird?!?

Also they didn't tell me to fast first and I've since read online that in the UK you have to fast for 6 hours before the test! So is this just another case of doing things differently in Germany? Has anyone had this done before? xo

They gave me a glucose drink as soon as I arrived then took blood (from my arm) straight away, then I had to wait an hour and they took a tiny bit of blood from my finger tip! I don't understand what this is supposed to measure especially since I'd had sweet stuff earlier in the day too!

it measure the level of sugar in you blood if it is above 5.5 (that's normal) then their is a chance you have diabetes but as you had sugar before the test then had the sugar drink and it was still ok i would not worry about it you obviously just have big babies!

Thank you! I was worried that they'd got the result wrong as I hadn't fasted first & I don't speak enough German to ask! Hopefully the next one won't be as big! He's measuring normal at the moment! Logie was 10 days late though and both hubby & I were around 9lb 2oz when we were born! xo

if he is not big now why did they bother to do the test? that seems a bit silly to me!

i think you will be fine as long as he's not to late, as baby's but on about 1lb a week in the last few week so the longer they stay in the bigger they are xx

I know, that's exactly what I thought! There didn't seem any reason to do the test! Oh well suppose it's good to be sure! Thanks for you help! xo

Gestational diabetes can cause child to be very large in the womb, and it makes them put on loads of weight, so I guess they were checking they didn't miss it last time.
I had to fast overnight, then drink that yucky drink and NOT MOVE; literally, for two hours. I was allowed to walk to waiting room but nothing else. I was told it was so that they could measure how quickly the body processed the sugar and movement, exercise etc, burned calories and affected the result. I then had to give another load of blood.

I had to have it as we had diabetes in the family.

When my midwife took routine blood check she found higher than acceptable levels of blood sugar (surprise surprise I had been biccie-tastic...).

So I was booked in for a test. I really worried about it!!!

I had to eat my dinner on the Thursday evening then no brekky and appointment at 9.30am. They took bloods then gave me a stinking orange glucose drink (typical the one thing that makes me sick during pregnancy grrr) and I had to drink it quickly. Then they sent me off shopping to the local mall (oh the misery and torment ) and all I could drink was water. I went back after two hours. They took my blood sugars again and said the results would be back on the Monday. All was well.

They were mainly worried about my baby being very big, as this is often the case with diabetic pregnant folks.

hth

xxxxx
