Hello. I need some help. I'm panicing loads. I'm 37 weeks preg with a BMI of 42. I'm 16st 9lb. I went to consultant today who has scared me out of my wits. She was saying how I will have to have a needle in my hand so that they can attach me to a drip if necessary and that the after birth will have to be tighly controlled by them to prevent my womb collapsing or hemoreging. The scans show that my baby is gonna be bigger than my first (Harry was 7lb 6oz's) and has a particularly big tummy. My blood pressure and my urine have been fine throughout so no cause for concern there but consultant was talking about my baby's shoulders possibly getting stuck. I'm just so worried something will go wrong or that my baby will be distressed. I'm very scared. Have any of you larger ladies had problems giving birth? Any birth stories would help. Thank you.![]() |

I'm not large and I still got stuck. I ended up with a section the first time, and forceps and stitches the second. Both times, both me and the babies were fine.
I have seen many women with wee needles on the backs of their hands - it's so they can give you a blood transfusion if you need it. It can be quite a hassle finding a vein sometimes, I guess they're just trying to prepare you, and get it while you're not too stressed iykwim. Hey, I had one too. It was no bother. Some women do find breastfeeding awkward when it's in their hand. It's just like a drip entry iykwim. Are you too late to ask for an elective c-section? I would totally go for that myself, with the experience of normal birth and a section behind me... Don't be scared hon, sounds to me like they're just giving you all the possibilities. The best bit is that they are aware of this stuff so will be looking out for it and looking after you. |

I'm not big but my LO got stuck too.
I had the same as Mrs H, they had actually prepped me for a C section but when we got into theatre she had turned and they got her out with Ventouse (and she was 9lb 1oz so am really really scared about what size this one will be...). By that stage I didn't care what they did I just wanted the baby out!!! I am sure you will fine Hun, loads of hugs and good luck. |

((((Huge Hugs))))))
like everyone has said, they are just preparing you and at least they know I'm not big and my first was 8lb 14 1/2 oz (so big for me) suction, forceps and then a c-section as she got stuck but not once did she get distressed 2nd- (was a week early) but was 7lb15oz and a natural birth, I hope it goes well, i'm sure it will xxxx |

I'm not exactly small but not big either weight wise. I'm just short of 5ft 5in and have size 4 or 5 feet. Ethan was 8lbs 15oz and had to be delivered by forceps. They prepared me for a c-section and took me into theatre but once there decided to try forceps. All was well n the end and worth every second of worry.
I expect they're just trying to prepare you honey. It's good that they're telling you now rather than rushing on the day to sort things and you not having a clue what's happening. Hope it goes well! xxxxxxxxxxxx Last edited by Ellie H : 20-02-09 at 13:16. |

Like many of the others, I had a forceps delivery with my first who was 9lbs 4oz at 37 weeks. I was also prepped for a C-section if the forceps didn't work. TBH thinking back to the delivery, I was so out of it when they were discussing the options and asking me to sign the consent that I think if they prepare you for the possibility first it's less scary.
I was scanned a lot with my second too; at a 36 week scan they estimated he was already 8lb 2oz but at 39 weeks when he was born he was only 8lbs 8oz and was a speedy natural delivery. The scans are only estimates and it doesn't follow that your second will be bigger than your first; mine wasn't. I was also warned about the shoulder thing. Try not to worry and just consider that it's better that you're being closely monitored and although it may seem scary it'd be worse if they were trying to explain it all to you while you were in the middle of labour and drugged up to the eyeballs (potentially). Big hugs. xx |
