hi all, not been on here for a while
basically when i returned to work after mat leave i got a new contract drawn up with my new hours 9-2.30 i looked at the new rotas yesterday only to see i have been put down for a shift ending at half 9 at night! im a single mum, my boss knows this so who does she think is going to be at home to put my daughter to bed on a school night at this time? i dont have anyone who can come to my house at this time of night to sit with my daughter while i work, so ive spent all today and yesterday worrying im going to get sacked/displinary if i dont do this shift ![]() kara xoxo |

thank you, reading what someone else would do in that situation makes it alot clearer about what to do, rather than me going into a blind panicky mess. im off for a few days but when i get back in i'll have a quiet word with mu manager. thanks again for the advice

Companies nowadays should be (by law?) flexible when it comes down to parents with children under the age of 7yrs.
I would suggest contacting HR (even if you are at home/on leave) and also look at the company handbook or online policy's regarding this situation. They cannot tell you your hours are between 9 and 2.30 then give you a completely different time slot! Unfortunately you also have to be willing or seen to be flexible, so you could suggest that if they are going to give you this type of shift that it be given only once a month and with enough notice so that you can provide adequate cover for your child! Hope this helps (could also speak to a union rep if you don't get support from HR). |

Talk to them, like you know what you're talking about. FAKE IT BEFORE YOU MAKE IT such as. I told my company the hours I expected to do, and by law as a parent I need to be accommodated where possible. If she CAN give you those hours, ask her out right why she hasn't given you hours that suit you when she has full knowledge of your situation. Making it difficult for you to work your hours is illegal, go to HR. Most people just need to know that you won't take any nonsense. Tell her what for.
