Default Weaning from breast to solids & formula

Hi
I'm also trying to wean my daughter to solids.

T usually feeds as follows:

BF first thing in morning anytime between 6 and 8 - anything from 15 mins to an hour

Breakfast (about 9.30/10.00)- 1 oz of baby cereal/porridge/fruit puree plus between 1 and 2 oz of formula

Mid morning (between 11 and 12)- BF for about 30 mins

Mid Afternoon (about 1.00/2.00ish)- between 1 & 3 oz of solids plus 1 -2oz formula

Late afternoon/early evening (about 3.30/4.00ish) - between 1 & 3oz of solids plus 1-2oz formula

I then offer BF before bed (about 5.30 - 6.00ish). Until she falls asleep.

T will then wake about 10ish for another feed and has started waking about 1ish and 3ish (sometimes just at one or other)

T will not take more formula with meals (probably full) and will not take any on its own. I have been trying to wean her on to sippy cup for a couple of months but will only take small amounts (no more than 4 - 5 oz total on a really good day, sometimes as little as 10mls). T will not use a bottle. I have recently started to wean to solids.

T is 26 weeks old.

I was looking for advice on how to reduce night feeds (or replace with formula feeds) and/or info on trying to get T to take more formula during the day.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I am trying to wean Sam and he just doesnt enjoy it! His night time sleep has really suffered due to chicken pox and teething all that the same time and now can wake every 2 hours - not needing a feed just a 5 min feed then off to sleep again.

I am now going more down the line of baby led weaning as its horrible to see him screw up his wee face at every mouthful and am reading a good book about baby led weaning which basically says that although you need to introduce solids at 6 months the main source of food is still milk. He now has managed to gum a piece of toast to death and i offer him fruit and veg, cooked until soft, in finger size pieces and he manages to get some in his mouth. Cucumber is a particular fav at the mo but that will be nice on his wee gums.

We managed 6 hours sleep before he needed a feed last night!

Hello,

My baby is nearly 9 months old and I've introduced solids since 6 months with great success -- he eats anything. In fact everything. The thing is people are starting to suggest I cut down on his milk feeds but I'm not sure how to do this without rocking the boat. He currently feeds from me at 7am, 10am, 1pm, formula at 5pm, and me again at 7pm (approx), with solid food at 8am, 11am and 2pm, and juice at each solid food meal. This works nicely and he sleeps through the night.

He's about to start going to a childminder for the middle of the day 10 until 2 or so so it would make sense to cut out the 10am feed, and possibly the 1pm feed, and then bf him at 5pm, but I don't know what to replace the mlk with? He never cries for food or milk but always takes it happily when offered.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Liz

Hello,

If I were you I'd give him a 9.30 feed, and supply some milk (whichever kind suits you) for the 1pm feed. At 9 months, I wouldn't 'replace' a breastfeed with anything other than expressed milk or some formula. Stick to his routine if you can, cause it sounds like you've got a great little routine going, would be a shame to lose it. I never had much of a routine, and they didn't sleep through for months, so you're doing really well as far as I'm concerned!

Does this help at all?!

Default Breastfeeding in the night

Hello

My little girl is almost 7 months old. I've been trying to feed her solids for around 4 weeks but in that time she has had a terrible cough and been sick a lot so isn't taking much yet. My problem is she is still breastfeeding a lot during the night, and has gotten to the point where every time she wakes a bit she wants to use me as a human dummy. I can't get her to sleep at any point unless I let her feed endlessly.

I'm really need help to get her to be able to pacify herself to sleep and wonder if controlled crying is an effective way to retrain her. At the moment if I let her cry at all she throws up. My older son slept through the night at 12 weeks so this is really baffling me. Thanks for any help.

You can try controlled crying but if she is likely to throw up every time then you are only creating a lot of work for yourself. I would try to soothe her back to sleep without feeding her. Put her to bed, stay with her, talk quietly to her, rub her back or whatever you need to do to help her get to sleep. Try less and less interaction each time and gradually remove yourself from the room. On the short term it will still mean sleepless nights but if it helps her to self soothe and get back to sleep on her own on the long run it will be worth it.

If she is not showing much interest in food atm becasue she is ill then I wouldn't worry about that at all. Even the best of eaters can go off their food when not well.
