Default 7 month old gags & pukes with solids!

Hi all, my first post so HELLO!

I have posted on the netmums site and not really had much responses so thought a foodie site might be better...

My 7 month old son has been weaned since 4 months and now that he is 7 months we have been trying him with jars with more solids in them (pasta, noodles, cereals with bits in- just general 7 month things) Also toast and rice cakes etc.

But he seems to gag and eventually will vomit when eating them. Pretty much every time. Its been 3 weeks now and I'm getting quite worried.
We try giving him his water bottle when he gags which sometimes works but most of the time it just means his vomit is more watery.

I'd like to take him to the Dr or HV but if they tell me to just persist with it I don't know what I'm going to do- I feel like I'm feeding him something that I know will make him vomit. Plus we can't really afford to keep buying both kinds of foods, plus all the washing were having to do which means more washing tablets/fabric softner. We have to change his clothes every time he pukes as it goes all over him and even the 'all over' bibs don't cover everything.

I know this is a site that is probably against using the jars but it was convenience and now I am really eager to start making my own stuff, just feel it will be pointless making up a massive batch if he will just puke it all up.

Anyone had the same problem/any advice please x

I've had no experience with this with my LO so can't offer much advice really. It could be that even though he has been weaned since 4 months your LO is not ready for more textured food yet.

If you are eager to start cooking for your LO then do so. Why not start off with a few veg or fruit, well mashed up but not real puree and see how he gets on with those. You don't need to cook up huge batches, if you are cooking veg for yourself for dinner just cook a bit extra for him (without salt) and see how he gets on. You won't be able to get them as smooth as the jarred food but if he does take to them you might be able to gradually increase the texture rather than moving straight from the real puree to texture stage as jars tend to do. A more gradual change in texture may work better.

If the problem persists then there might also be no harm in visiting your doctor just to rule out gag reflex problems.

my lo used to gag all the time, he never really managed with proper lumps or finger foods til he was 1. i would just keep going with the jars & just introduce the odd very soft lumpier stuff occassionally, maybe a piece of banana, piece of soggy toast. its all strange for them not to just instantly swallow food, so when they do on a big piece it gets stuck & makes them gag & throw up or worse choke! you're not alone & theres plenty of time for him to start eating big boys food. good luck xx

just remembered, i bought a baby safe feeder to help my lo to learn to chew - it was a great help. you can get them on internet for a few quid. worth every penny. basically you put large bits of food in it & the baby has to chew on the netting to get the food out - its help their gums too. worth a try.
