Default sweet and sour sauce: yummy!!!!!

Made the sauce from the sweet-and-sour fish recipe in AK's fussy eaters and it was fab: served it with chicken, sliced red peppers, spring onions and carrot gratings (peeled slices off a carrot with potato peeler to look like the bits you get in a chinese meal!) and boiled rice.

V quick to make: dont think I'll be going back to jar sweet n sour sauce anymore!

For 2 portions, the sauce is made as follows:
100ml chicken stock
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
1 and a half tbsp tomato ketchup
1 tbsp caster sugar
1/2 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tbsp cornflour
1/2 tsp sesame oil

Mix altogether and heat altogether til thickened and then pour over chicken and veg! Made sauce whilst cooking chicken and it was already before the rice was!!!!!

and its cheap too: bit a quick totting up of price for the sauce using what I used: I made triple the above amount for 6 portions for 82p!!!!

And that was using Knorr brand stock cube (I used half a cube), Heinz reduced salt and sugar tomato sauce and Amoy reduced salt soy sauce: if it was all own brand it would be cheaper! Once you have paid the initial outlay for all the bits, you will have a quick tasty sauce you can make!

I used one organic carrot, abt 3 spring onions and 1 red pepper: abt 92p!

Obviously you have to allow for the chicken and rice: havent calculated this as I buy chicken in bulk from farm shop so much cheaper than supermarket. I used basmati rice so it was abt 50p and chicken was abt 600g for 4 adults and 2 toddler sized portions (Rhys had one for tea and have put other bit in fridge for him tomorro): probably at £6 for above chicken

So 82p, 92p, 50p and £6: £8.24 for all the portions: say 4.5 adult portions would be £1.83 per portion which I think is isnt too bad for a chicken meal esp when you compare using use the chicken, rice and veg anyway and then cost in a jar of premade sauce!!!!!!!!!

I just made this for Ollie's tea, it really was so easy! Ollie loved it and as I didn't have white wine vinegar I used apple cider vinegar and it was still delicous. thanks for posting, will use this again! x

Also we used egg noodles and mixed it all together.

I made this sweet and sour sauce last night and it was lovely, hiann realised you had missed tomato ketchup off the list though.
