Default Advice on fish

Im not really a fishy person and I have never cooked it, unless it comes in a can or of the 'finger' variety. I want to cook a nice fish dinner but dont no what to do or how to do it. I dont want anything too strong tasting. I dont really like salmon, but I like cod. I would like to try something different though. Can you give me some nice, simple fish ideas and how to cook it and what to serve it with please. thank you xxx

I'm not a salmon fan but Ellie H recipe for Salmon Pie is lovely. Not 'fishy' at all iykwim.

We had it last night for tea and made double so one is in freezer for another week.

I buy Hake because it is more 'meaty' than fishy, poach in a little milk and a bay leaf and then cover with parsley sauce- my LO loves it too!

I get some cod, in one of those sauce pans which looks alittle like a frying pan but they have a lid.

Add a little water, (not too much as it will steam cook mainly) add fresh chopped parsley, chopped garlic, olive oil (I like a little freshly ground black pepper & salt) But not if i'm making it for LO too.
(sometimes do his in his own pan)

Then cook it, it doesn't take long

I have it with steam veg and garlic bread.

if it's a really nice piece of cod loin, you can't go wrong with a couple of knobs of butter, a squeeze of lemon, wrapping it in a foil parcel and popping it in the over.

Cod in cheese sauce

finely chop some tomoatoes, add some grated cheese, a herb of choice, i.e. basil or parsely and a handful of bread crumbs, pat down on top of the cheese and bake in the oven.

spread with a small layer of pesto and bake in a foil parcel

you could also do a mild fish curry

i have a recipe for sweet potato and cod soup, sounds iffy but is lovely. let me know if you want it posting (i'll remember to pop back and check!)

When you get your JO book (I did read in another thread that you have ordered it??) try the cod wrapped in bacon - really simple and really yummy. The bacon gives it a lovely flavour.

I have a really nice recipe for lime and ginger salmon with noodles its one of our favs!
Also I sometimes top a salmon fillet with pesto and breadcrumbs and bake in the oven. I know you said you didnt really like salmon but you could do this with trout.

Asda do lovely bags of fish at the fish counter and you can add in lemon and different flavour butters they seal them in a bag and you just pop it in the oven.

Fresh tuna or sordfish stakes are really nice more meaty then fishy!

HTH

I make a lemon and parsley fish pie. Buy my fish from tesco's they do a 500g packet of fresh salmon for £4 but I buy that packet with 2 other meat packets and save £2. I also then add 1 alaska pollack fillet to the salmon and I make a white saurce and add the parsley to that. I add a whole lemon juice to the milk for the white-saurce and then just top the liquid up with milk so I have tio right liquid quanity. For the mashed potatoe on the top of the fish-pie I use sweet-potatoes instead of normal potatoes like king-Edwards or something like that and I add some grated cheese to the top of the mashed sweet potatoe. Ooh and in the mashed sweet potatoe I only use butter no milk as I found the saurce makes the potatoe a bit to mushy if I add milk to the potatoe aswell. Taste fab and I'm not a fishy person either.

Maxi I'm interested in your soup recipe you have, sounds lovely
