Unhappy Not eating!

Since the weekend Logan has stopped eating almost everything apart from drinking his milk and a bit of water. He is definitely teething but it wasn't this bad with the last two teeth. I am really worried as he was never the best eater, always preferring his milk and now he is so skinny I can see his ribs

He has a docs appointment in two weeks for his next immunisation but I don't know whether to take him sooner if he continues not eating? How long would you leave it? Hubby's not worried and thinks his appetite will return when the tooth comes through but I'm still worried. He's drinking all the milk I'm giving him (around 600ml/ 1 pint a day) of follow-on milk. I'm really tempted to increase this as I know he'll drink it but am worried he'll be too full for solids then.

He won't even try anything offered to him on a spoon & refuses to open his mouth. He won't eat fruit or veg as finger food and only a little bit of toast/cheese on toast or a few bites of rice crackers (usually he'd eat it all!) Apart from this he seems happy & is playing as normal & sleeping through the night apart from Mon night when I had to give him Calpol for teething pain.

Could this all be down to teething or is he going through a phase of not wanting to eat? I give him the spoon when he tries to grab it, thinking he's not eating because he wants to feed himself but he just throws it on the floor!

If anyone has experienced this I'd be really grateful for your advice! xo

I wouldnt worry the important thing is he is drinking.
Have you tried calpol or teething gel before meals? how about a smoothie with lots of milk/fruit in?
when Jessimae is teething she can go without proper food for days... i find she will try things like breadsticks/rusks so i just keep offering different things and try not to stress.. (easier said than done!)
another thing she loves is bread soaked in fruit juice (sounds yuck) either squeezed orange/apple juice..

im sure once his tooth is through he will make up for it, but if you are worried see the dr to but your mind at restx

Do a search -even though the search feature now is *&^&%. I vaguely remember this topic coming up on the new site.

It does seem like teething. Would tend to agreee with hubby about not worrying too much. Couple of things that may help. Calpol before meals. Also try freezing some strips of fruit and then either letting them eat them by himself or suck on them in a baby safe feeder.

His behaviour otherwise is normal and he is happy so would not be worried. If he wants more milk or formula as opposed to food during this period of a few weeks, I would personally just go with the flow and give it to him. (that's what I have done with Noa and she always ended up back on more food again after the tooth cut)

Good luck!

Hi,

I know exactly how you are feeling, my LO is exactly the same when teething. Like Rachael I just keep offering food until she is ready to start eating again but it can be days sometimes. Last time Molly went off both food and milk and I was worried sick but as soon as the tooth came through she went straight back to normal.

Easier said then done, but try not to worry, keep offering food (maybe his favourites) and eventually he will be back to his normal self. If you are really worried I would go to the doctors earlier just to stop you from worrying.

xxxx

Thanks everyone for all your tips & also for reassuring me that it's normal & he's not the only one! I'll definitely try the smoothie & frozen fruit strip idea (just bought a mango today so that'll be nice)! I've always been wary of giving too much Calpol and only give it when he's crying in pain (I try Nelson's Teetha first) usually at night but it's good to know I can give it before meals too, to try to get him to eat something so thank you! I can hear him moving around on the monitor now so he'll probably be hungry wanting another bottle so I better get one in the steriliser! xo
