Allergy to oranges?

Imo ate orange segmants for the first time this lunch time and staright away a red mark appeared under her lip. I rang the health visitor for advice and she says she does'nt think it is a allergy and advised for me to rub some on her arm and see what happens (?) what do you thinmk? Has your LO got an allergy to citrus and what were the first signs? Beth xxxx

Citrus sometimes (at least by me) gets my mouth and chin red. Would try the rubbing bit, but during the day and when someone else is home with you too.

I'm allergic to orange, and my mum informs me it first showed up when she gave me orange juice, I threw it up and came out in hives, and when I ate an orange segment at my nana's once I remember being sick, and having a rash on my tummy.

Most citrus allergies show up because they are eaten or drunk. Most allergies are confirmed via skin scratch tests.

Its not unusual to have an allergic reaction to oranges, but it does not always mean allergic to all citrus fruits.

Symptoms can include:

skin reactions, such as swelling and itching, eczema and flushing
vomiting and/or diarrhoea
coughing, wheezing or a runny nose
swelling of the lips
sore, red and itchy eyes

Allergic reactions usually happen within a few minutes of eating food that you are allergic to, but they can take several hours to develop.

If Imo's reaction was just a mark on her chin, and no difficulty in breathing or swelling of the mouth then she may just have an allergic reaction and you may need to omit that from her diet.

But with all possible allergies, if the symptoms are in any way difficulty in breathing or swelling of the mouth/ face then seek urgent medical help. ( this is a rare form of reaction though and normally for people who are allergic to things such as nuts or shellfish).

thanks Jules that was great advice. She is ok but still got the red mark so could be something else? I might try her again next week to confirm if it is allergy or coicidence, will check with GP first, thanks, beth xxxx

if she still has the red mark perhaps it is not connected at all, and merely a coincidence.

I would mention it to the doctor when you next visit if you think it is perhaps an allergy and see what he/she suggests in the way of checks . x
