Unhappy 10 mth old won't eat lumps

Hi

My 10 mth old won't eat lumps and will actually suck the sauce off lumps and spit the lump out e.g. lasagne! its definately a skill!

She was doing ok, then had an ear infection, followed by a chest infection, and didn't eat properly for a week, then was ok for a week and then got an ear infection again and stopped eating.

Now she is feeling a bit better and started to eat again, she will eat things like cauliflower cheese, but spits out lasagne, or anything with lumps such as peas or sweetcorn etc.

I wondered if she was being fussy and wanted to feed her self and she will eat sandwiches and toast herself, but anything I try to give her she refuses

Any suggestions?

Sharon

I got this problem too, my LO is nearly 10 months. Have you tried mashed foods first ? Lucy will sometimes eat this (depending on mood) I think they need to slowly be introduced into the lumpier food, I also add cous cous to purees. I thought lucy would prefer finger food for her meal as she already eats toast, rice cakes etc, so I gave her a plate of veggies for dinner, OMG what a mess I think out of her meal she actually ate about 2 batons of carrots! she just held it all in her hands and squeezed the life out of it! I know they have to learn but how do you get them to actually eat aswell!! I'm just trying everything at the mo so will be watching this post for tips!

Ethan spits food out (mainly carrots...strange child) unless I give him some on his highchair tray for him to pick up himself, so I'd definitely let her have a go at feeding herself. Be warned, the mess can be quite incredible....heheheee!

My advise would be just to keep trying... they will get the hang of it, Jessimae likes foods to self feed she needs to examine what it is, how it feels and how it tastes!! shes now got the hang of cutlery so the mess is a little less.... just keep tryingx

I would definitely let them feed themselves, no baby alive will starve, seriously I know it seems scary but my twins liked to feed themselves from about 9 months and would do a bit themselves and then let me.
They could sense if it was a big deal for me that they ate and that would always be my biggest problem times. If I was blasé about mealtimes they always ate more.
Its a control thing, let them have it where it is safe, oh and invest in a huge wipeclean mat for under the highchair, the freebie playmats that you get on the baby mags, its so much easier to feel less stressed.
