I was actually rather annoyed by this. The uk papers and news are reporting it in a way that suggests that "how dare she not tell everyone" that this was helping her lose weight. When did it become the right of every person out there to know the medical PRIVATE information about someone because they work in the public eye? Ok I am discussing it now, but I do believe that it is not my right to know this information. Come on. How can people feel "cheated" by her? It is her right to have a private life and if she is finding ways to make herself healthier and thinner then it is her choice how she does this. It is not an easy operation or decision to have it so I think people viewing this as a trivial matter are being unfair. Good for her I say, I feel she has nothing to be sorry about. What is your view? Last edited by bevvsedge : 03-06-08 at 10:45. |

Even if you have a gastric band you still lose weight mainly through diet and exercise.
I think most of us tell little white lies to hide certain things that we'd rather people didn't know sometimes, yet we expect our celebrities to be whiter than white. I think she was asked how she was losing weight and decided that just because people were asking what (I think) is a personal question, it doesn't mean she has to tell people why if she doesn't feel comfortable and then not answering would have made people suspicous... I don't think she was ever asked if she had had a gastric band so I wouldn't class it as a lie. I think sometimes people think they have more rights to know about the ins and outs of peoples weight problems, like because it is a problem you can see it is public property. But if someone was suffering with an "invisable" problem people assume that those people deserve more privacy. Which is totally unfair. Being over-weight is a real health issue and can cause physical and mental problems/issues for people. It is portrayed often as a shameful thing so who can blame Fern for not wanting to go into it? |

I cant make my mind up on this one.
On the one hand she has said her weightloss is "diet and excercise" so this is partially true and she is promoting good values to people. On the other hand though she has prmoted her slim image based on "diet and excercise" so she is giving the impression that that is how she has achieved it and she knows how powerful the media is and what effect that will have on others. It gives over weight people false hope in thinking that such fast weight loss results can be achieved. I agree that she deserves her privacy and im sure with hindsight she can see that the impression she gave was misleading. However, she has not done any harm to anyone and it didnt really justify front page coverage! |

I was appalled when I read this, not because Fern Britton had a gastric band fitted but because it was deemed to be front page news ffs. It's her business and no-one elses, she doesn't owe anyone an explanation.
AND.... has she not cycled around India for charity which required months and months of training beforehand? In my book that counts as exercise!!!! |

I'm sitting on the fence a bit. I totally agree about her wanting to keep it private as its personal and in some ways no one elses buisness. However, she is in the public eye and was sort of wrong to make out ( if she did) that it was all through diet and exercise when the gastric band helped to kick start weight loss. I don't feel 'let down' think she's great and looks fantastic, but think it would have probably been better to be open about it but understand its her decision. Ps love new phots bevvsedge

Like SephiesMum i was annoyed to see it on the front page, just because she lives in the public eye does not mean that she has to tell everyone all of her private life!!!
I really admire Fern, she has cycled in India & Egypt for womens charities & that to me is a darn lot of exercise,i doubt i could cycle to my local shops!!! If that is how she wants to lose weight then who is anyone to judge her? Good for you Fern is what i say. |

Here is a woman who has spoken out about postnatal depression and cycled 100's of miles for charity and all the media can do is focus on her dress size and how she got there!
She lost weigh and improved her health and has probably added a few years to her life to spend with her kids, so good for her. If newsdesks think Fern telling a white lie is headline news then they need to open their eyes and take a reality check!! Seriously. xxxxxxxxx Last edited by Ellie H : 03-06-08 at 22:38. |
