Angel Help! Is my 3 month old drinking enough?

Hi everyone!

I'm really new to this and new to being a mum! After a tough first few months we feel like we are getting somewhere but have hit another hurdle! I breast fed for the first 2months and reluctantly had to give up as just couldn't satisfy my little one - she would always fall asleep on the breast and then wake up starving with practically nothing to feed her Anyway, she has been on formula alone for the last month and although she started off well, she is very distracted when eating ( I have tried feeding her in a darkened quiet room) and often only feeds very little! On waking she eats 3oz only (if I am lucky - she would rather chat and smile! ) And then gradually through the day - every 3 hours build up to 4oz and then at a dream feed at 11pm she will demolish 5-6oz! And then a feed again at 5/6am approx 4oz - I just don't understand! Is this normal - has anyone else experienced this? Do you think she is bored with the milk and should i try introducing baby rice when she hits the 4month mark? She is sooo sooo active and needs stimulation all the time so it amazes me she drinks so little! She does have a normal amount of wet nappies and doe's poo's every other day but they are a little hard bless her! Any advice would be much appreciated..getting mixed advice from friends and family

Hi, I also have a 3 month old who is very distracted at feeding times lately, it's completely normal they are just taking in their surroundings and becoming more aware of everything. I just offer him the breast a little more often if i feel he hasn't taken enough, he tells me if he doesn't want it LOL! Try not to worry she is obviously taking what she needs, she will let you know if / when she wants more. x

Thank you so much, that does sound pretty sensible Hopefully as time goes by her hunger will distract her more than her surroundings! I might try stretching out her feeds a little longer too as perhaps i'm just feeding her a little early all the time

Thanks again so much for the reply. x

Hi, welcome to the site, my lo is almost 6 months old, I too bf until 2 months and when she went onto a bottle she was a very small eater, 4oz was a good feed for her and even that would take over an hour for her to finish by going back to it every so often!
However like your lo she had plenty if wet/dirty nappies and was gaining weight. They will take what they need!

Now she's on solids and taking a good milk intake too so dont worry, like iwantone said, it's completely normal.

Hope you enjoy the site x

hi & welcome, i echo what the others have said, as long as she putting on weight & plenty of wet nappies, then she's doing fine. i guess the formula is filling her up much more than the breast milk, so she needs less feeds, if she's hungry she'd definatly let you know. good luck xx

Thank you so much everyone I now have her on 4 hourly feeds and she is much happier! She takes nearly 5ounces at a time and 6 at her dream feed so things are looking up! Still only napping for 45 mins at a time in the day but shes pretty happy between so I guess thats just her thing! Thanks again, loving this site - so nice to have advice on hand from experienced mums all the time x
