Question How much formula should he be drinking?

My DS is 4 months old next week a weights in at 17 lb already he is solely bottle feed (breast feed for nine days but he was too hungry and loosing weight) he is on 5 x 6 oz bottles per day he slept through from 11 weeks going from 8-9pm last feed next feed 8-9 am then feeding every 2-3 hours which is fine but he has now started waking between 2-5 (a bit of a shock!!)for a feed and still seems hungry after the bottles. I am not sure if I should put the bottles up to 7 oz as he is very sicky during the day. I don't want to start solids just yet but I also like the sleeping!

What do you recommend ladies?

I'd increase to 7oz if I were you. At 4 to 5 months the average recommended feed id 7oz five times a day. They tend to go through a growth spurt at around this age too which makes them hungerier for milk.

As for waking, just because they start sleeping through doesn't mean it will continue in the same pattern. They like to keep us on our toes! Solids don't guarantee a good nights sleep either unfortunately.

Have you spoken to the healt h visitor about the sickiness? Both mine used to bring quite a bit back up afterfeeds (more than your usual posseting) but had no problems otherwise.

It's late and I'm waffling!

Hope you manage to catch a few Zzz's soon.

Thanks for the advise I have put him up to 7 oz today and hopefully that will work! He managed to sleep till 8 this morning and didn't have any solids yesterday, so yes I think he just likes to keep me on my toes!!

As for the Health Visitor, they don't have things like that over here!! ( I really miss England!!) you just have to see the family doctor but that is only when they have there injections or they get grumpy that you are visiting them too much. They aren't much use either, he just laughs and says oh hes a big boy!! like that helps!

Thanks again

Where are you in the world?? I am from canada originally and there is a lot of help.. you just have to look for it!

Yes i would up to 7oz but 4months is INFAMOUS for a growth spurt

Are you starting solids??? if so i wouldn't that could be the reason for sickness really try to hold off offering solids. unless your doc advises.

I would say it could be a bit of reflux.. Yes we all like the sleep but babies are different.. and i hate to say some people start off with great sleepers and then they turn to not so great.. It could be teething as well?

if he is dranning a 6oz bottel put it up a oz then if he is dranning a 7oz put it up agane i dont agree that a baby should have a set amont i think give what they want and if they dnt drink the full added oz's then it is better than them being hungry. At 4 months my lo was on 5x 8oz and 1x 6oz bottel and sleeping 6pm-6:30am
