thanks. it isn't red yet, but hasn't massively improved, i fed her on that side for a long time tonight and massaged the spot all the time i was feeding, when she finished it felt a bit better but it is already feeling hard and lumpy again now. think i may go to doc in the morning just to avoid it getting any worse.

Hiya hon

It is important that you don't ignore the symptoms of mastitis. They can (worst case scenarios) lead to cysts which can, in some cases, lead to an op to remove some breast tissue!

Anyway, sounds like you're doing the right thing goin to the doc. You may be suffering other symptoms, like hot or cold flushes, shivers and sweats.

Take some paracetamol tonight. Get in the bath like Abbie says, and express away. Warm flannel also good. When I had it (I've had it a number of times!) I used to lie baby on the middle of the double bed, and 'drop' the breast down for the feed, at a different angle. I'd heard (though I haven't heard since) that if you have their chin lined up with the lump, they empty that duct more readily. It's a blocked duct that causes the mastitis. I did this and it worked for me.

I'm not sure this would be the best time to start training bubs!

For each feed, start on the affected side, but be sure when it's meant to be the other side's 'turn' so to speak, that you get her onto the other side quickly. So ten mins on affected side at the start of every feed, regardless of which side you were meant to be on. You have to empty it completely.

Think I've remembered everything. I'm drifting away from the counsellor stuff, so can't remember that much!

Can you take Ibubprofen whilst breastfeeding!?!?!? I seem to think you can - you can check the BFN leaflets on line. They are pretty good. The thing with ibuprofen is that it is it is an anti-inflamatory so should help reduce any swelling which might help the flow. Of course check though, as maybe wrong.

Sorry if too much info but there's no scabs (for want of a better word) on your nipple that are stopping flow from one particular area!!?!?!?

You feel really crap with mastitis but it sounds like you are on top of it.
