I BF my 1st little girl and expressed to freeze - at 1st I got hardly anything but I know I had tonnes of milk as she was feeding fine and I could still feel it basically.
As she got older I could express a 9oz bottle from one side and still feed her I had so much milk but I think that is because I continued to express and freeze as I was feeding (which was a waste of time frankly as she never took bottles lol)

With my latest little girl I am also Bfeeding and have tonnes of milk... again I can only tell as she seems happy and is active and putting on weight and I can feel how full I am. She sometimes feeds more often than every 4 hours but I just feed on demand. I figure if she wants some milk why not she might just be thirsty - I don't mind what time she has a drink so long as she is drinking.
I have tried expressing milk and can only get off 2-3oz at a time - though I can still happily feed little one after.
I have no idea why I can't express this time but could last time - I just know I still have lots of milk and my baby girl is a good eater. I have the odd day where she seems to be attached all day but then she is fine for ages after going back to 4-5 hourly feeds. She is not starving, I do have enough milk... it just won't come out for a pump.

Babys are so much better at getting milk out than a pump - not getting any milk off when you express does not mean you don't have any.

When I had my LO I was told in the hospital not to be disappointed with the amount of milk I got from pumping as pumps were no where near as efficient as babies at getting the milk. I pumped regularly for about 7 months, never got more than 1-2oz a day unless I had missed a feed or two so I most definitely agree with the above.

I'm not overly happy with the "express and see how much you have left" type of advice either Pumps are just not as good as babies when it comes to getting milk out. Hannah only feeds for 5 min on average every 3-4 hours, and she is on 75th centile for weight so she is obviously getting loads in those 5 minutes. Yet if I try and express, it takes me 30 minutes to get 2oz, and thats from the side she hasn't fed from! So if I was going by this advice, my poor baby must be constantly starving, which is just not true.

Not happy with it; while its nice to have a special section and advice from someone well-known, I think those of us on here like ladybug etc who do answer people's questions can do just as good a job. I know some of us have also done the training to be breastfeeding counsellors so its not as if we're just randomly suggesting things, we have training and our own experience to back it up. New mums don't need to be confused, they need encouraged that our body knows what it is doing and sometimes we just need to give it time to adjust.

As for the comments on the other site about AK books, I'm like Julie, I never really cooked before but I do try and make a effort now to make homemade food. The books helped give me ideas of foods to try that I would never have thought of myself. If members from that other site don't like AK or her books then why do they bother coming here? Doesn't make sense really.

I love this site, its the only one that I really bother with now. Its so much friendlier and there is a real feeling of community unlike many other sites I've been on. Sorry for the long post, just thought I may as well add my bit to the thread!

Got a breastfeeding meeting to go to on thursday about the milk bank here in Northern Ireland, should be interesting

I must admit, i was the same. What with working full time i often couldnt be bothered to cook from scratch when i got home so more often than not i relyed on processed food etc - i know it wasnt great for me but honestly my mum didnt cook much from scratch either.

I knew i didnt want that for my child - i wanted him to eat real food from weaning. It was really (and still is) important to me. So - god forbid - i bought AK books. I dont really see what was wrong with that tbh. A mum buying a book to help her do the best for her child - whats the issue? Now i cook from scratch most nights (sometimes am bad). MAx is a pretty good eater - has his fussy days but think thats more to do with being a toddler and trying to express some control rather than being a "fussy" eater.

And as a result of buying these books, i went on line to her site to see if there were any other ideas and i found this forum, which has been a godsend from both ideas for food, to help with a whole range of subjects. The people here are much nicer than on some others i have been on. Whether thats do to with being a relativley small forum (compaired to some of the others).

Its a hard enough job being a mum without being told that you are stupid for buying certain books or believing certain things. We should be supporting each other - thankfully thats what happens here (including the odd lively debate )

Where is this holy grail of breastfeeding information anyway? Can honestly say that in nearly 2 years I have never looked at anything other than the forum on this site.

Should I have said that out loud?

Hmmm, so is that the questions answered by CBC then, I thought that she would be directly addressing questions posted on this forum? Or is that happening at a later date?

Thats what I thought too, but maybe they will look at the questions posted here and then have it as a topic under the advice part. Not sure
