I wanted to ask your experience about breast feeding premature babies and expressing milk. Just incase baby no 3 happens
![]() Both my babies were premature and I was told both times that they needed to have formula to top them up. My first was 9 weeks early so was tube fed at first with breast milk then had to learn to feed but I had very little help with this so was advised to bottle fed. Cause of this I expressed for many months instead of actually breast feeding which was very hard. My second was 5 weeks early and was not in NICU but the midwifes wanted to insert an NGT to feed him even though he was taking to my breast very well. I had to argue not to have the NGT fitted cause I knew the problems I had last time and wanted to see how he got on. The midwifes eventually agreed to check his sugar levels before and after feds and he was fine. What advice would you give in my experiences. Last edited by cole : 23-04-09 at 16:46. I had problems breastfeeding. My baby was never satisfied. She seemed to be constantly feeding and I could never express anything not even a drop. I lost more than half a stone in weight over 5 months breastfeeding (from my pre-pregnancy weight). I spoke to a lactation consultant and they said to increase my calories. I did this several times but my baby was still never satisfied. I ate three good meals a day (most days) and was always snacking in between too. I drank as much as I could physically fit in with all the food I was eating (at least 2 litres a day).
What more could I have done or was she just a very hungry baby? It was only weaning her at 5 months old that stopped her constant demand for milk. She's my first so I don't know how normal her demand was but from other people's reactions she was feeding more than normal or at least what they considered normal anyway. Thanks in advance |

both my children breastfed but were only on for about 5 minutes ish per feed whilst being solely breastfed and now I'm still bf ing my 8 month old son who is having 3 solid meals a day and he does have a few feeds during the day but only about a minute or two at a time! Is he getting enough? I worry he's not getting enough fluids cause I struggle to get him to drink water during the day. Thanks xxx
