Default christened

i have had hard time with this issue too. neither me or hubby are sure we belive, and in my opinion getting christened is the start of a commitment to the church. you have to teach them from then on. we didnt think it was right to get ellen christened for the sake of it and not followiing through after that through her life to me if we did do it would be an insult to those who belive when i dont.

a friend when told this said get her done anyway to save her soul......didnt think a child soul needed saving

In Judaism until the age of 12 for girls and 13 for boys where you accept upon yourself the burden of the commandments, you cannot sin 9actually your parents take your sins for you) and therefore you are pure.

Thanks I'm very glad to hear that! I think maybe I need to convert to a different religion But I suppose you should really be able to pick your religion based on what you believe rather than having to follow your parents. I think I'll check out the local churches and find out what their beliefs are. I certainly wouldn't want to introduce the boys to a religion I don't entirely agree with. xo

At this point just introduce them to God. Have them just pray and ask God directly for what they want.

It's hard for us as my OH doesn't believe in god, I would like to get our LO christened but it would mean OH standing there and saying he will bring her up with God's help etc etc and he isn't really prepared to do that and I don't want to force him to say things he doesn't believe.

I intend to take her to Sunday school when she is a little older and we can get her Christened when she is older if it becomes more important.

I definitely don't think she wouldn't go to heaven just because she isn't Christened. I though anyway that you got the chance to accept God and repent of your sins even after death...

I also think you don't necessarily need to perform all the religious rituals and can still be a very spiritual person and live a good life.

I think that being a good person has nothing to do with religion at all. I do respect other people's beliefs but don't share any religious ones. I have had the odd "well then you shouldn't celebrate Christmas" comment, but I believe that to be more of a family time nowadays anyway.
oh yeah totally agree, each to their own and all that & yeah Crimbo for us is a time that the whole family gets together and everyone gets on , you know a time to forget about any silly arguments and stuff and to just enjoy each others company, coz espec with grandparents you never know how many more christmases you're gonna be able to spend with them

Hey, next time someone says that to you, you can tell them that most of the Christmas traditions have very little to do with Christianity... most are connected to the old pagan Solstice celebration (shortest day of year), which is about the same time (Jesus's real birthday is some other time of year apparently). In fact the Christians highjacked the whole thing! Xmas trees, yule logs, feasting, candles, holly, ivy, mistletoe - all pagan. Apart from nativity plays of course...
