Default GP

Hi all

We are still in NY due to fly home this evening but OH has been really ill since yesterday which has been a massive shame, so I phoned to get him an appt with our doc tomorrow when we get back but the prob is despite my nagging he never bothered to register (and has never really been ill till now).

Anyway basically the receptionist told me, yes he can register but he can't see a doctor for 48 hours as the "have to put him on the system". I was like he really needs to see someone and she said "well he can go to a drop in centre then". WTF...I thought the purpose of those was for people who couldn't register with a doctor e.g. no perm address, or couldn't get appts etc

Anyway I was pretty furious and was like I have been registered here for 5 years etc, anyway the upshot was I ended up making an appt in my name with the intention we will go and fill the forms out before the appt and then say I don't need it but can OH have it but don't really want to massively annoy them there.

Can they do this i.e. say you can't see someone for 48 hours. Have looked on patients charter and just says stuff like you have the right to register with a doctor easily etc nothing specific.

Am so seething about this, I think I am going to ask to speak to the practice manager when we got back to the doctor. What does putting him on the system achieve other than DOB, name, address etc, it isn't like they will get his medical records straight away or anything and they won't get those within 48 hours.

Am seriously mad about this. Anyway sorry rant over.

A x

What a nightmare, but yes they can do this i'm afraid, he isn't a patient of theres as yet and there days are full-up with registered patients, Crappy i know, i'm sure if they weren't so busy they would fit him in, so like you say maybe see if they could see him in your slot

big hugs hun shame hubby has been ill. That's terrible about your doctors I think i know which one you go to and I changed from there. Not really sure whether they can say that or not, there is a walk in clinic at st georges and also an out of hours doctors at St Helier which I've taken Jess to.

Hope your doctors let hubby take your apppointment xxx

It is so rubbish as when I was trying to book for him it was like - no appointments he has to wait 48 hours that is policy for new patients but as soon as I said fine can I have appt she was like - there you go....luckily i don't think she cottoned on to the fact i was booking to us appt for OH.

I just don't understand what all this "they have to put him on the system" is about, she said he could register.

Am quite worried as have never seen him this bad and am worrying they won't let him on the plane. Hopefully we will be back tomorrow, luckily we are staying with my sister so it is fairly relaxed there.

they can basically do as they please, but a good surgery will let someone be seen under your name whilst registering... they have to check nhs previous details etc..xxx

hope oh is okxxx

Hope he's ok Anna.

The NHS drop in centers are fab. We had one next to where I used to work and we used to often use it instead of our GPs as it was so handy. Sometimes it got busy and you had to wait but they are there for anyone who needs to be seen by a Dr/Nurse and you will get assessed when you get there to see who he needs to see. I only ever went with minor injuries etc but if they deem it more serious there are Drs there too.

The only other option is to register as a temporary patient/resident. I've had to do this a couple of times when I've fallen ill when visiting my parents.

But you don't get a priority appointment and I had to wait a while before seeing anyone.

Hope he's ok and that you were able to get home.

xx

We managed to get home ok, I seriously don't think he should have travelled but he refused to listen to me and said he just wanted to get home.

His M&D had Iz and were at our house when we got in, they took one look at him and carted him off to the local NHS drop in centre (I rang ahead and spoke to the nurse they said bring him down) they took one look at him and sent him to A&E where he has been seen and they are doing blood tests, chest Xray and heart ECG thing. I am sat at home with Izzy worrying.

They aren't sure what it is but think it could be chest infection or possible a clot given the plane travel.

At least we got back ok and it is all getting sorted now. What a total nightmare I am just glad we have a fairly decent hospital on the doorstep.
