Default Calpol Night/ Medised

OH bought some more Calpol Night yesterday and when we looked at it we noticed it said 2 years plus, I looked at the old bottle and is said 3 months plus. We looked at the ingredients and literally they were exactly the same.

Anyway I popped into Boots today to ask the pharmacist about it and she said that now they are marking Calpol Night, Medised and all those types of medicine as for 2 years and above as people have been abusing them and giving too much to get LOs to sleep and stuff. I hope we don't fall into that category

Anyway she said it is still fine to give to LOs under 2 but it is to try to stop parents abusing it.

i think it was because of the press it had earlier in the year about the sleeping ingredient thats in it, and given to babies of a young age can lead to more of a risk of cot death. i was refused it in boots the other day, woman refused to sell it to me when i said that tom was under 2, even though its only a matter of weeks away and i have given it to him since he was 3 months old. so much for a parents judgement!

See below. But I am amazed that a Boots p'cist said this as they are technically breaking the law.

True, but because the license changed it is illegal for the pharmacist to sell you these products when they know you are going to give them to under 2s. They could be prosecuted, fined, lose their licence to practice and potentially be jailed for this.

Having said all that, I give Rhys Medised: he only gets it a odd time. I dont have any concerns about giving him it. (I did buy some the other day from a p'cist I know so she knew what age he was but i did say that I wasnt worried abt the age thing plus the fact that she knows I am a p'cist too. So she knows I wasnt a "spy" from the Pharmaceutical Society, a newspaper or Which magazine so wasnt likely to dob her in!)

We all did do a big thread a few months ago about the ins and outs of it. Anyone post a link to it as dont have time to go looking for it?!

Yes. Thats the one. I still think it was all a big deal about a small issue: some people were abusing the meds in their kids so now all of us ahve to suffer: the doses that we used to use were safe as long as you didnt go over them or give with similar meds.

I do not know how I missed that thread the first time round, my brain is like a sieve these days I remember now about those banned medicines but didn't really think anything of it at the time as we only ever used Calprofen.

I have been prescribed piriton in the past by a GP to help her sleep but didn't really use it, although I have to say have probably been giving her Calpol night a bit too much recently but things have been really bad.

Hiann and Nickit thanks for the link to the original thread.

I think this must have changed about 6 months ago as when Tilly was about 22 months, I went to buy some medised and thay asked me how old she was and warned me it is now directed only for over twos.
I asked my GP about it and he said that one of the ingredients in Medised has in some cases given the children night terrors, so put us off using it.
I'm sure you are not abusing it honey so don't worry too much.
Is Izzy ok? Hope she is not too unwell honey
big hugs
MM xx
