Default How often do you give your LO Calpol?

Just wondered how much Calpol other people give their LOs? Or how long you use it for?

I seem to be giving it to Luca all the time recently.

Until last week I'd only given it to him twice before, but during the last 7 days Ive been giving it to him practically all the time (well, with a day off every 3 days).

I hate giving it to him, but its helping. Should I be worried its too much?

I admit i probaly give it too much (i dont mean overdose though!) I am using that calpolnight most nights at the moment in the hope it will help Imo sleep. I know it is the wrong thing to do as it is meant for pain reliefe that helps sleeping, but admtitedly i do think she is waking with tooth pain. It does'nt even help her sleep that well, same as usual. As for the not giving calpol for more than 3 days rule, my GP said that is only if you have'nt seen a doctor as after 3 days there pain needs to be investigated incase it is something serious, but if you know the cause then it is fine in moderation. Imo crashed out at 6 tonight as she sleet for 10 mins this morning and nothing since so is soo tired i hope i wont need the medicine!! Beth xxxx

Aw, tooth pain is the worst - thats what Luca's suffering with at the mo. Well sounds like you're doing the same thing I am, so I'm happy... he's having Calpolnight every night, bar the 4th day, but maybe Ill just give it to him every day until hes not in so much pain.

I'm just one of those people who hardly ever takes painkillers or anything else, so I feel guilty giving it to him... but I dont want him suffering!

He crashed out at 5.30 tonight, he only spent 40 minutes napping today, but I know he'll be awake by 11.00 latest, he always is poor little lamb

When you say all the time, do you mean a few times a day? It seems like you are only giving it at nightime. I personally think it's fine as long as you know the problem. there is no need to keep the LO's suffering. You may want to alternate with ibuprofen (motrin) as it has longer coverage than acetominophen and is a bit stronger (if the acetominophen is not helping well enough)

I was pondering this last nite before i read this thread, tom has had calpol every nite now for 2 weeks, just at nite, however yesterday 4 teeth all at one have name an appearance inc one of his back molars, he had been crying most of the nite on and off so i gave him some more at 3am and again this morning, i think as long as there appears to be a reason then fine, What i dont like is when i give Tom it in a dispenser he opens his mouth automatically for it like he has it constantly x

Once again-I perosnally see no problem giving acetominophen every 4 hours even if it's for a few days in a row, and I really don't have a problem with giving it once a day for a week or two during a tough time like teething.

Don't know who told me , but someone said adults would never be able to live throught he pain of teething, so why should the LO's suffer.

I'm also seeming to be giving Finlay medicine all the time. He has a mixture of calpol and Nurofen, alternating between the two. He doesn't really like Calpol and TBH it's seems to do naff all to get rid of any pain, whereas the Nurofen works much better. With Calpol you give 5ml and with Nurofen it's 2.5ml so it must be stronger or the dose would be more. I have to admit that even the 2.5ml seems to be doing nothing and at 1 year old thay can then have 5ml so I have been giving (at night only) 3ml instead of 2.5. I figured at nearly 10months an extra little bit when he can soon have 5ml isn't going to hurt him and this seems to take away the pain for him but he has been ill and teething for 5 weeks now and the teething has actually been months. I'm not giving it every day but it does concern me that he is having so much medicine at the moment but like everyone has said, if they are in pain, why should they suffer when medicine can help them, that is what it's for after all. I just hope I'm not doing more damage. I do try to use other methods first and give maybe just at night at the moment or if really bad and about to rip his ears off, I then give him some. But it's so hard to know what to do.

i try not to give painkiller unless i really have to. might sound cruel i guess, but i read somewhere that you can become reliant on it & evenutally it will have no affect at all. not sure if this applies to babies too. anyhow, i can usually tell from the type of cry whether Freddie is in proper pain or not & if he is, then he gets the calpol/nurofen. but if its just a whingey cry i don't. xx

I'm the same as Cathy, I only give Ethan Calpol as a last resort! He usually copes with teething on Bongela alone, but this weekend I had to give him Calpol for the first time in about 6 months!

We use Medised when he's bunged up as it helps decongest him.

xxxxx
