Any chance she is teething ? My LO never gets nappy rash except when he is teething, and then it can appear completely out of the blue. And it disappears as fast as it arrives. If I do see any signs I just keep him well covered with a barrier cream, and make sure to clean and dry well at every change and it clears up again.

Do you and the nursery always use the same brand of nappies? I know a few months back there were a lot of people had problems with one of the pampers ranges when they brought out the recent thinner nappies and it seemed to be causing quite severe nappy rashes. Something about the chemicals in the nappies were harsher than usual.

Just an idea. Hope you find the cause soon, it must be so uncomfortable.

I was going to ask about teething too. Both mine have suffered bad nappy rash when teething. Max's used to almost disappear instantly once the tooth had broken through. Sam does seem to suffer with it worse than Max.

I try to leave his nappy off for periods during the day, as this really does help clear it up. Not a solution at nursery.

Have found too using different creams when its at its worst helps too

Hope you find something that works soon

I do believe it started with teething. She had four teeth through and none for ages, then the next four all started at once. But these are all through now, and I can't see any more coming. Mind you, I know you can't always, so maybe she's got a stubborn one on the way! It's just so horrible to see her in pain, I don't want her to be frightened of having her nappy changed!

She has always used Pampers baby dry. We did switch to active fit for a bit (a while ago now) but they just leaked constantly. Baby dry have been much better. I might try changing nappy brand - I'll try anything! Nursery use the same ones as us because we have to provide them!

I'm also thinking of trying baby powder (starting from when she's not sore). I used to work as a nanny about 12 or so years ago, and it was standard practice to use talc, I know it is frowned upon now. But none of the babies I looked after ever had nappy rash the likes of this, and talcum powder is the only thing I think is done differently now. I remember using wipes and disposable nappies without any problems. Course, the children might just have been less sensitive. Come to think of it I'm not even really sure why powder is forbidden! I just followed the advice I was given...poor tired mummy sheep that I was at the time!

I was always under the impression that talc isnt widely used on babies any more as the dust (for the want of a better word!) is so fine, its really easy for them to breathe in. I know that i cant use talc on myself for that reason as it sets off my asthma. Avent do a liquid talc though - it goes on like a cream but dries to a talc so there arent clouds of the stuff everywhere

Well, the nappy rash is pretty much gone - and my thanks go to all of you for the support and suggestions but especially Debs! Even though Alyssa has always had the same brand of nappies (Pampers), what you said stuck in my mind, so I followed your advice and tried changing nappy brand to Huggies. I also stopped messing about with fancy creams and followed mum in law's suggestion of trying simple vaseline. And the combination seems to have worked like magic.

I am never going to use Pampers again!

Now, my fabulous band of mummy-gurus, what can I do about baby bad breath?

Oh that is good news, hope the rash stays away now.

No idea about baby breath though!! It's not like we can give them mints to suck on Eating a piece of cheese after a meal is supposed to help regulate acid levels so maybe that would help?

I suppose just regular brushing teeth is the best thing to do, although my children aren't that great at brushing as we always seem to be rushed in the mornings.
