How do you explain thunder to LO's???
We had a few rumbles here the other day when Evan was round his nans and she said that frightened him a bit and then tonight we have had a big storm. Thankfully Evan was asleep through it, but it got me thinking about how to explain what it is without frightening him??? I am terrified of thunder and lightening myself but obviously dont want to show Evan that Im scared because I dont want him to worry.
I remember my mum telling me that it was God moving furniture around when I was younger, but Evan's not going to understand that and he hasnt got the foggiest who God is. How did you explain thunder and lightening to your lo's, or how will you explain it??? I havent got a clue what to say

We had a horrid storm and flash flooding in our area today. Ethan knew it was a storm because of an episode of Thomas and Friends .
I didn't make a story up and just tried to simplify the truth. I told him it was when hot air met cold air in the sky and that's what made the thunder.
He kept saying to me, 'Nothing to be scared Mummy, it's just a storm.' Bless his cottons!

Harry hasn't witnessed a storm yet to ask, but I guess I would say that its the black clouds bumping into eachother that makes the thunder and the lightning is....erm dunno really!! lol! xx

ahhhhh thinking about it actually, Evans got a Thomas dvd where there is a storm. I think Rheneas hides away because hes scared, or something like that. Will have to watch it with him tomorrow and explain it to him. Good thinking batman!

Rhys is great with T &L. A few weeks ago, he first herad it: I took him to the door and said to listen and then went "boom" after the thunder. Told him to look for the lightning and go "flash" when it happened. Then we counted between the lightning and thunder and he loved it as he loves counting! Then we ran round the room shouting "boom, flash"!
And told DH what had happened later and did the same today.

I had the same problem today as well, we had huge storms here and i hate it! My Mum used to tell me the same about God moving his furniture, and lighting was him turning his bathroom light on! Who ever thinks up these things?? Im not going down that route either, too complicated. Luckily Liv didnt say much about it today, when she did i told her it was a noisey aeroplane?? Dont ask it was the first thing that came into my head!

I have said what Katie said but when we had it the other day, I thought he was going to be petrified cos he was in his room by himself, but he said it was a man digging and "stop that noisy right now please" but if and when he asks again, I will just say it was the clouds banging into each other as Katie said, i think that's a practical non-complicated (and easiest ) answer xx

Freddies only heard thunder a couple of times & i just told him that the clouds were full or rain so when they bumped against each other it made a rumbly sound, not sure yet what to say about the lightning, can't say i really understand myself, but i'll come up with something if & when needed. probably just say its electricity in the sky caused by the bumping of clouds.

We had it bad here this afternoon, Isabella was in bed telling her dollies it "was that naughty rain being very noisy" and didn't seem phased.
We told her ages ago that sometimes the rain is noisy just like sometimes people are noisy and she was happy with that.

We say this to Aub's , it works as she doesn't seem too fazed by it
My mum used to tell us it was god moving furniture (not that we are religious)
