corruption is a massive problem. We had a girl come and work at nursery who is a white malawian. She was lovely (dim as anything though lol) but her family owned a big tobacco plantain back home and were very rich. She said that if you have enough money you can do anything, officials turn an blind eye, some of the things she said terrified us, we were extra nice to her iykwim

I'm in two minds about this, I think Madonna could give the little girl so many opportunities in life, chances she will only be able to dream about and although money isn't everything and she would miss out on a lot culturally I think she would gain more than she loses (imo) but I also don't think you should be able to buy a child which Madonna would effectively be doing, using her wealth and profile to bypass the laws of a country.

On the other note (corruption) although obviously there is corruption in a lot of countries in the economic south it isn't the only problem, it can be argued that the capitalist states use their wealth to control the global economy and therefore keep the south at disadvantage because that is in their interest, I realise this is only one argument and liberals may argue that capitalism and free markets should allow for self-sustaining economic progress I personally think that ex-colonial states were put at too much of a disadvantage by colonialism for this to happen.

This isn't necessarily true. The city in which I live is currently under going a 20 year study of all babies born between 2006 & 2009 as the incidence of childhood disease, infant mortality and poverty in our city is one of the highest in the UK.

I don't really have strong opinions on the Madonna adoption bid but I think if I were ever to adopt or try to adopt I'd like to look closer to home to help someone. I think sometimes it's easy to forget that a life in the UK isn't always perfect and it's easy to view the lives of the children in our counrty through rose tinted spectacles.
