Hello Everyone, my name is Emma and I have a 7 and a half month baby boy called Finlay. We found out last week that he is allergic to cow's milk and eggs. I assumed that he would just be put straight on to soya milk formula but he has been prescribed Cow and Gate Pepti and I have been advised to limit the amount of soya products I give him as there is a new Government legislation that states that soya milk may cause fertility problems later in life. Has anyone else heard this?? I have read that goat's cheese or feta cheese can be used in moderation in some cases, has anyone tried this?? and if so, would it be OK to use Goat's milk on his cereal???http://www.annabelkarmel.com/communi...s/confused.gif

Can too much soy affect fertility?
by Lynn Grieger, RD, CD, CDE Dear Lynn: I have heard that consuming too much soy can affect a woman's fertility. Is this correct? How much is too much? Thanks, -- Itach Dear Itach: This is certainly a new one for me! However, when I started researching your question, I did find one reference which indicated that soy protein may in fact lessen fertility in SOME women. The "American Family Physician" (June 1996) stated that up to one-quarter of women with fertility problems may be helped by dietary changes. The researchers postulate that, since the phytoestrogens in soy products increase the length of the follicular phase and lead to fewer menstrual cycles over a woman's lifetime, it is possible that soy may decrease fertility in some women. They believe that women with multiple risk factors for infertility may be more sensitive to soy than others. I wasn't able to find any actual studies that looked at this particular problem. It does seem strange that in countries where soy products are consumed in large amounts, the birth rate is no lower than in countries where soy is not routinely consumed. I also haven't seen any reports that vegetarian women, who are more likely to consume soy products, experience disproportionate fertility problems. At any rate, if you are experiencing fertility problems, it certainly won't hurt to limit soy in your diet. Since it's the protein portion of soy that contains the phytoestrogens, you might want to avoid tofu, soy milk, tempeh, TVP and soy nuts. Soy sauce does not contain phytoestrogens, so you can continue using this to flavor foods. Sincerely, Lynn Grieger, R.D., C.D., C.D.E. Last edited by noababy : 08-10-07 at 06:20. |

Here is another article about problems with soy in general.
I think the key point like with everything is not to go overboard on any particular food type. http://www.healingcrow.com/soy/soy.html |

Hi Emma
My son was diagnosed with egg and milk allergies at 7 months although I did put him on SMA Wysoy since he was 4 months old as i did suspect that he had an allergy to milk. I did try at the request of his dietician to get him on Nutramigen but I had already started weaning and he was so used to the wysoy that he would not take it. The only milk which is recommended by a dietician is the milk that you have been prescribed and you can use it in cooking and baking, my son is also allergic to the proteins in goats milk and therefore cannot have any goats milk or cheese products. How does Finlay react when he has milk products? I can tell if my son will have an allergic reaction by rubbing some of the food on his arm he only has to touch a product containing milk or egg and he will have an allergic reaction. I also give him soya yoghurts as I am paraniod about the amount of calcuim he gets, although I shouldn't worry as his wysoy contains the calcuim he needs, but you can't help but worrry! Michelle x |

hi my little one has allergy to cow protein, lactose and then discovered allergy to soy severe ecsema and vomitting ... having her allergy tested after she turns one .. apparently if you allergy test before then it will be inaccurate and have to do it again ... its been difficult as my husband allergic to stone fruits so I can't give her advocado, peaches, apricots .. basically pear and apple .. she eats well b/c her meals are always especially made, it gets really exhausting b/c would love to shove her a yogurt, banana, cheese sticks ... but can't ... not even the soy alternative ... am hanging out to see what happens and am hoping we see some light at the end of the tunnel b/c we have been vigilant in what we do give her .. bring on 8 November ...
those formulas have heaps of calcium so don't worry b/c mine has been surviving pretty much on that ... its call Neocate .. must be the australian alternative to nutramigen.. Marisa Melbourne, Aust |
