Default Soy Sauce alternative

Hi there,

My son is almost 2 years old and has been dairy, egg and soya free for the last year because of intolerances. I just bought the AK Family Meal Planner book and, although Ive found alternatives to egg, milk, butter over the last year, Im stuck when it comes to replacing soy sauce...

...any ideas? I wondered about marmite but as I rarely eat soy sauce and never eat marmite, I dont know if Im well off the mark!

Marmite is nothing like soy sauce so I wouldn't use it.

A recipe I've seen a couple of times on other forums is:

* 2 tablespoons reduced salt beef stick
* 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
* 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
* 2 teaspoons molasses
* 1 teaspoon sesame oil
* 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
* black pepper to taste
* 1/4 cup boiling water

Mix all together and use as is or simmer for about 15 mins to reduce a bit.

I reckon it should keep fine in the fridge for a few days at least if you don't want to use it all at once.

If you are doing something like a stir fry then just leave it out and let others add it to their own dish at the table.

Had a quick look around the web, most of the substitues are like the recipes above.
Found this one on recipes4us.co.uk which looks much simpler, no idea on its taste though...

Thanks again!
