Heating/washing/daily wear can cause the plastic to release chemicals which may or may not be dangerous to humans. Experts are divided about the risk but they all seem to agree that the chemical (bpa) is dangerous in more concentrated forms but many feel that the amounts released in plastic baby bottles are harmless.
New bottles are ok it's just as they get knocked, dishwashed/sterilised or tiny scratches appear that the plastic coating starts to break down. You can now buy bpa free bottles or just replace them regularly.
