Breast Feeding Without Tears With Clare Byam-Cook

My baby keeps choking and pulling off my breast. What can I do?

Clare Byam-Cook says

When a mother has a really fast flow of milk her baby may find it hard to swallow quickly enough, causing him to choke and let go of the breast. The best solution for this problem is to use a nipple shield – this helps by slowing and containing the flow, so your baby only gets the milk when he chooses to suck. Some babies find it easier to cope with a fast milk flow as they get older, so keep trying him without the shield every now and then.
