Breastfeeding - The natural way
Breastfeeding is the healthiest and most natural way to feed your baby so it is worth breastfeeding even for a week. This is because your breast produces colostrum for the first three to four days, which is a thick yellow fluid high in antibodies which will help to protect your baby against infection before her immune system can start functioning properly. After two to four days, milk production is established and colostrum gradually changes into mature milk. Unlike formula milk, the type of milk that you produce changes during a feed. The first part of the feed is watery and quenches your baby’s thirst. This is sometimes referred to as ‘foremilk’. The second part of the feed is more creamy and higher in calories. This satisfies your baby’s need for calories and is sometimes referred to as ‘hind milk’. Colostrum also helps the passage of the meconium (first stool) through your baby’s gut. This will change colour from dark brown to green to yellow and have ‘mustard seed’ appearance by the third to fourth day. Breastfed babies’ stools will remain like this until weaning begins and must not be confused with diarrhoea. Breast milk is packed with antibodies and strengthens babies’ immune systems – its rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. Research shows that babies who are breastfeeding for just one month has health benefits – protecting babies from tummy upsets, chest infections, eczema and even obesity. Breastfeeding contains all the vital nutrients that your baby needs for the first 6 months of his life. However, if you are unable to breastfeeding or are uncomfortable with it, you can still give your baby a good start with formula milk. |
Don’t forget that there are lots of available resources for breastfeeding information including National Childbirth Trust and the Department of Health.
