Breastfeeding - Expressing Milk

  Your Feeding Questions Answered

When can I start expressing milk?

Clare Byam-Cook says

You can start expressing your milk as soon as it comes in so long as you only express roughly the amount of milk your baby is drinking. If you keep expressing far more than this, you will over-stimulate your breasts – if you then you stop expressing, your breasts may become engorged which might trigger off a bout of mastitis.

What is the best time of day to express?
There is no set time of day that is ideal for expressing milk. Each mother needs to discover for herself at which point of the day she has the most milk (this tends to be in the morning) and to see whether it suits her to express milk at this time. It is better to express straight after, rather than before, a feed to give your breasts time to fill up again before the next feed

Don’t forget that there are lots of available resources for breastfeeding information including National Childbirth Trust and the Department of Health.
