Breast Feeding Without Tears With Clare Byam-Cook

How can I tell when my baby has emptied my breast?

Clare Byam-Cook says

Once your baby stops sucking effectively (long, slow & deep sucks) he has probably pretty much emptied that breast. As breasts are constantly making milk, squeezing your breast and seeing a few drops of milk come out does not mean that there is plenty of milk left – you can only really tell if your breast is completely empty by using a breast pump to see exactly how much milk is left after these few drops. But, I recommend that you only use a pump to check your breast is empty if you are worried that your milk supply is low.

Don’t forget that there are lots of available resources for breastfeeding information including National Childbirth Trust and the Department of Health.
