12 Months Babies - Learning

Your baby's first week

• He loves to read books, particularly interactive books with flaps to lift, pop up pages or buttons to press that make noises. If you name a familiar object on the page, your baby may be able to look at the picture and point to it.

• Sometime during the first year, your child may be able to group objects that look the same. For example if you give her several pairs of shoes she may be able to put the two shoes in each pair together.

• Plays make believe together. Your baby will enjoy it if you take an active role too. For example, if he is playing with a toy telephone, help your child dial the number and then ask to speak to Daddy and hand the telephone back to him so that he can have a make believe conversation. Or play together with a miniature plastic tea set, pretending to eat and drink.
